Athwala
“In some parts of the world, students are day going to school every day. It’s their normal life. But in other parts of the world we are starving for education. It’s like a precious gift. it’s like a diamond.”

Education is the most empowering force in the world. It creates knowledge, builds confidence, and breaks down barriers to opportunities. For children, it is their key to open the door to a better life. However, it is a sad reality of our world today that millions of children will never receive this key. They are destined to stay locked in cycles of disadvantage and poverty. According to the government statistics hundreds students of 6-14 age group in Polonnaruwa district leave school every year because these students have to face all sorts of problems to get education. Due to the pathetic conditions of deprived families, their guardians are not able to afford their school spending because of which intelligent and ambitious students get miles away from the school education.
Welikanda is a rural village which is located in Polonnaruwa district and beside poverty the people in Welikanda also suffering from child pregnancies. According to the WHO every year, an estimated 21 million girls aged 15-19 years in developing regions become pregnant and approximately 12 million of them give birth. These adolescent pregnancies are a global problem occurring in middle- and low-income countries like Sri Lanka. And most importantly these teenage parents do not have that ability to provide quality education for their children because most of them are economically unstable.
Project “Athwala“ is an initiative of Rotaract Clubs of Badulla And SLIIT to help exclusively for underprivileged children to Welikanda village. The first phase of this project focus on facilitating of books and stationary material for their education during the beginning of academic year.
First of all, by considering the main purpose of the project the area was selected. Lumbini primary school in Welikanda was chosen for that as the most suitable place for the project with the guidance of Polonnaruwa district secretariat. Then the permission was taken from the Lumbini Primary school administration for the donation process and selected 48 students from other students with the help of teachers of the school. As the next major step of this initiative, members of our organizing committee were encouraged to find a sponsor for this project and fortunately the John Sims foundation, Bandarawela was agreed to donate School Material for the students. Once the school materials were collected and sorted, our team journeyed to Welinkada Lumbini Primary School. Then was able to donate 144,000 worth essential school materials to the 48 students.
The rotaractors’ efforts were met with encouraging feedback and heartfelt gratitude from the students, affirming the positive difference it had made in their lives.
