Value Added Livestock
Livestock products such as meat, fish, eggs and milk are consumed mainly within the Sri Lankan market. These are not the only products that can consume. There are huge number of products developing day by day within the country. Dairy industry is focusing on many products such as value-added ice-cream products, whey related products, different types of cheese and many other. Egg consumption at present mainly done as omelet or boiled form. There are different products such as egg rolls, pickled eggs and powdered eggs which can easily be introduced to the local market. Novel fish-based products such as Surimi, Fish sauce, Fish paste, fish protein concentrates are other products which can be introduced to the market. Different products are developing by enhancing the nutrition and other organoleptic characters.
In terms of consumption different value-added products and novel products can add a variety to the diet of the people. These products related to livestock are helping to get rid of protein malnutrition within the country. Developing products to common markets without framing only to super market can expand the consumer preferences. Consumers have to be aware about these different products. The framework of using only traditional products has to be expand with these products. Numerous steps such as dissemination of knowledge regarding value added livestock-based products, identification of gaps between the market with the consumer demand and introducing a related product can enhance the customers preferences.
Livestock industry is the most valuable industry for Sri Lanka. This industry helped to withstand the difficulties during pandemics like COVID-19. Dairy industry has remained as a least affected industry within the pandemic. Therefore, enhancing every sector of livestock is really important. Value addition is one method which can livestock sector stronger.
