"Tolerance is the virtue of a man without convictions." - G. K. Chesterton
November 16th marks a day of great significance, as the International Day for Tolerance is observed around the world. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1995, this day serves as a beacon of hope for a more peaceful and inclusive society.
The International Day for Tolerance and Mahatma Gandhi are
both connected through their shared commitment to promoting peace, nonviolence,
and respect for human rights and diversity, a steadfast champion of tolerance
and human rights. The International Day for Tolerance was created to promote
mutual understanding, acceptance, and respect, which are vital for building
stronger and more resilient communities. Tolerance is a cornerstone of coexistence and diversity, and
it is essential for sustainable development. It is a powerful tool that helps
to create a more peaceful and inclusive society, where everyone can live in
harmony.
To commemorate the International Day for Tolerance, many
organizations and groups around the world host events and activities to raise
awareness about the importance of tolerance. These events include cultural
festivals, workshops, and educational programs, and governments and other
organizations may also launch campaigns or initiatives to promote tolerance and
respect for diversity. The International Day for Tolerance also contributes to the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which promote peaceful and
inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for
all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all
levels.
As we celebrate this day, let us all pledge to work towards
creating a more tolerant and inclusive society, where everyone can live in
peace and with respect for the rights and dignity of all.
