In the world of cricket, legends are not confined to just the players on the field. Sometimes, it's the fans in the stands who become legendary, and one such icon of cricket fandom was Percy Abesekara. Known as the "Cricket Uncle" of Sri Lanka, Percy Abesekara was a name synonymous with his passion, undying loyalty, and unmatched enthusiasm for the sport.

Born in 1936 in Colombo, Percy Abesekara's love affair with cricket began at an early age. Growing up in a cricket-loving nation, he quickly developed a deep attachment to the game. However, it was in the late 1970s that he truly emerged as a cricket superfan, and there was no turning back.

Percy Abesekara earned his famous moniker, "Cricket Uncle," due to his fatherly demeanor and his unbridled passion for the Sri Lankan cricket team. Clad in his iconic blue blazer adorned with numerous team badges, he became a fixture at cricket matches around the world.

Percy's trademark was his enthusiastic drumming and chants, rallying fellow supporters to cheer for the Sri Lankan team. His boisterous enthusiasm and support turned him into a symbol of hope for the team and an integral part of Sri Lankan cricket history.

From the World Cup victory in 1996 to the historic Test series wins, he was always in the stands, wearing his heart on his sleeve. His presence was felt by the players and the fans, and he contributed significantly to the electric atmosphere in cricket stadiums.

One of the most iconic moments was when he unfurled a giant Sri Lankan flag on the outfield during the 1996 Cricket World Cup final. This symbolic act captured the essence of his undying support for the national team.

Percy Abesekara's legacy extends beyond the cricket field. He inspired countless young fans to become passionate about the game. His dedication and love for cricket were contagious, and he played a crucial role in developing Sri Lanka's cricket culture.
